LS Energy Solutions

Looking Back on an Exciting 2024 of New Leadership at LS Energy Solutions

CEO of LS Energy Solutions

December 20, 2024

As I reflect on my first year as CEO of LS Energy Solutions, a great year for LS-ES has also been a momentous one for clean energy. Driven by new utility-scale installations, solar continued to reach new heights, with the country on track to end the year with just under 220 GW of total capacity. Even wind, whose growth slowed a bit in 2023, hit record generation levels this year, surpassing coal production for only the second time. Perhaps just as exciting, the growth in renewables isn’t concentrated in one place – long a leader in wind, Texas continued to host a dramatic rise in solar that began in 2023, and will soon surpass California as the country’s largest solar market.

All this new renewable energy could spell disaster for the grid without energy storage, which makes it all the more exciting that storage reached record installations as well. If predictions hold, the country should end the year with around 36.4 GWh of storage, a record high and over a third more than in 2023.

As energy storage reaches record highs, I’m proud to lead a company that continued to drive storage innovations in 2024. In my first year overseeing the great team at LS-ES, we reached several important milestones in 2024, including:

  • Continued work on our biggest project ever, the 200 MW/400 MWh Big Rock site in Southern California. Our team is hard at work installing our storage containers and ensuring the site is ready for a safe and successful energization, while our partners at Gore Street Energy Storage Fund have announced a resource adequacy contract for the site.
  • Continuing our partnership with V20 Energy to install 20MW 20MWh projects in the PJM market based on the original 14.6MW All-in-one design. We have added three more project sites in 2024, and are rapidly approaching the COD for the first of these three new projects to provide ancillary services in the market.
  • Announcing the completion of a BESS project with the non-profit Citizens Energy Corporation in Greater Boston, where our team learned the complex ins and outs of municipal energy operations in Massachusetts.
  • Joining our cross-company colleagues in celebrating the 50th anniversary of our parent company, LS ELECTRIC.
  • Teaming up with LS ELECTRIC in yet another successful exhibition at the largest clean energy event in North America, RE+, where the LS-ES team highlighted our latest string inverter technology.
  • Through growth and development in our engineering team, we are expanding the offering of our engineering labor services, focused on improving product applications, system configurations, installation oversight, and commissioning services.
I am truly impressed with everything the LS-ES team has accomplished this year, and as I close out my first year as CEO, it continues to be an honor to come into the office and see the faces of people driven to accelerate the energy transition. While I’ve been part of the LS Group and LS ELECTRIC families for over thirty years, leading LS-ES has been an exciting new journey for me, and I thank everyone at the company for making me feel welcome in 2024.

Looking ahead to 2025, I can’t wait to share with the rest of the world what this great team has been working on. We will continue to enhance our excellent engineering and services capabilities for applications and other highly technical energy storage needs, further making LS-ES a one-stop-shop for battery energy storage systems and services. As the clean energy transition accelerates, the need for utility-scale battery storage and its associated products will only become more critical, and LS-ES stands ready to meet the demand for ESS technologies.

Sincerely,
Marcio
